The future of web analytics

My experience over the last 10 years in internet projects is that web statistics are not used to its full capacity by web site owners / managers. The reasons are both simple and disappointing, a lot of people involved in internet projects don't have a clue what you can measure and what the value of the data can be. Let alone data is analysed and interpretation of the data is used to make informed decisions.
First step obviously is using some kind of system for reporting. Whether that is Awstats, SurfAid Analytics, Webtrends, Google Analytics (formerly known as Urchin) or a new player specifically for blogs knows as Performancing Metrics is irrelevant. All these reporting systems deliver a lot of information that will keep web administrators on top of what's going on on their site(s).

Keep it simple

I just read a very interesting quote, supposedly attributed to Ray Ozzie, of Lotus Notes and Groove fame, "..... complexity kills. It sucks the life out of (software) developers, it makes products difficult to plan, build and test, it introduces security challenges, and it causes end-user and administrator frustration."
