Microsoft search to be powered by open source #kumo #yam

Interesting story on 'The Open Road, the business and politics of open source" about Microsoft using more and more open source software, especially in its Kumo search technology. Makes me wonder how this relates to the FAST acquisition Microsoft did last year. This Februari the main theme at the FF09, Fast Forward conference was unfortunately about Enterprise Search and the tight integration of Sharepoint (!) and FAST ESP. What does that tell you about the scalability and viability of the FAST in certain applications? Why would the Kumo team opt for open source and not use FAST ESP, it is Microsoft property, so money can't be the issue. Time to keep a close eye on Kumo and commitments in commercial software.
