Today I had the opportunity to play with a Kindle 2. Compared to the Sony, Bebook and Iliad it is an improvement. The device design is acceptable, not the edgy and crude Chinese type of cheap industrial design. But still lots of room for improvement. And what most of these device makers don't understand is the importance of a really good embedded OS. Obviously an OS that doesn't get in the way and supports the user, the user experience us key. Ofcourse reading is ok with the high contrast E-ink screen. However what's missing is the 're-think' reading and make it worthwhile to ditch paper and go digital approach. But then again this is only the first generation of devices. Unfortunately Kindle isn't available in Europe which limits the exposure and reach, and prevents people from experiencing the device and the e-book distribution system.
